TMI Tuesday – Goats on a Boat

Well, I’ve finally gotten around to cleaning up this place a bit. Added a few links. Updated my website in a few tiny ways. Nothing big. I did finally push that page-meter a bit … you’ll notice it no longer says Goddess of Beauty. Yeah, I’m no longer sure what I’m calling that book. But in order to keep the same acronym, I’ve started referring to it as “Goats on a Boat.” Because, you see, they’re on a boat… and there are goats. It may have a new title soon.
And of course, there’s an allusion there to Snakes on a Plane. Which I haven’t seen. It’s not a conscious oversight – I can count on one hand the number of movies I’ve seen in the past year or two. Mr. Dare and I have really got to get a date-night sitter for the Darelings more often. When I’m in the mood for a movie, I usually find myself popping in the same DVDs over and over again.
And so I ask you this Tuesday, what movie have you watched a truly embarrassing amount of times? And now you can’t say Casablanca or Gone With The Wind or something good. In order to be TMI, it must be an embarrassing movie.
Back in ye olde days of the VCR (remember Beta?) and before the days of Nintendo, my brother and I had a very few movies on tape and lots of time on our hands. Did we go outside and frolic in the clean Midwestern air? Of course not! We watched those same darn movies again and again and again.
And last week’s post on chest hair brought to mine one of those oft-watched films: the 80s classic, Teen Wolf. No, I’m not talking about that actual classic, I Was a Teenage Werewolf, starring Michael Landon. I’m talking about Michael J. Fox’s tour de force portrayal of a shaggy high-schooler who just wants to win the basketball game, get the girl, and use his big-bad-wolf-growly voice to buy some beer. We had that movie memorized, I kid you not.
Now that I think of this, and look at these pictures, two things come to mind:
1)This may explain my lukewarm feelings on paranormals.
2)Hello? Geico cavemen anyone?

Okay, I’ll own up to watching BABY BOOM an embarrassing number of times. I can’t help it. I love Sam Shepard and the cute baby.
And I love Michael J Fox. DOC HOLLYWOOD is almost as worn out as Baby Boom.
Less embarrassing, but close (am saved by the fact that Meryl Streep is in this film, making it automatically a “good” one)is ONE TRUE THING. I love that movie.

So… we actually didn’t have a VCR until I was eleven.
I’ve listened to an LP record of Return of the Jedi a shocking number of times, though. Is that good enough?

Animal House, hands down. I know the dialogue by heart. “Seven years of college down the drain.” I will never be too old to warch this movie (and Mr. R, that paragon, said he actually lived it).

Ha! I have CM beat at something. LOL! I never had a VCR until I went off to college. We never had video games or a microwave either but enough whining.
We did have HBO and I admit I might have watched the Porky’s movies many more times than I should have. Since I was 9, perhaps 1 times was already too many.
I’ve watched Grease II several times in the last couple months so that might count. And heaven help me my child is home and has brought her addiction to High School Musical with her. Just in case you don’t know, Zach Ephron is the cutest boy ever!

An old Steve Guttenberg movie — Don’t Tell Her It’s Me… Now, the movie itself isn’t embarrassing. It’s a really sweet romance about a guy recovering from cancer and his sister who matchmakes and makes him into a hunkster. No…the embarrasing thing is how much I paid for a copy of it on e-bay! (gasp)

India, I think we’ve talked about our mutual love of Baby Boom. That movie makes me want to move to New England farmhouse and support my kids by making applesauce. Heh. Only in the movies.
CM – I must have been 10 or 11, too. My family was always on the lagging end of any technology trend. The only reason we finally got one was because it was Betamax, and those were going out of style, so it was very cheap. I think I had an LP of ROTJ, too. But does that count as a bad movie?
Maggie – I’ve actually never watched Animal House all the way through, believe it or not. But if and when I do, I’ll think of you. 🙂
Terri – I’ve heard about this whole HSM craze, but since my oldest is 3, I haven’t yet been forced to watch, er… introduced to the joys of the movie. Actually, I have a feeling I’d like it. Just maybe not 17 million times. You have my sympathies. But then – I imagine you’re glad the Barney and Teletubbies days are over! Maybe you should pity me. 🙂

Ericka – that’s one I’ve not heard of, but it sounds like a keeper! I did love Steve Gutenberg in Three Men and a Baby.
Heavens, I was just seized by the absurd notion to write a book called Three Dukes and a Baby. Bwa. Don’t worry, I’m sticking with Goats on a Boat.

Not at all a bad movie, but perhaps a little juvenile – I am obsessed with THE PARENT TRAP, and I still watch it all the time. And not just the classic Hayley Mills version, but also the Lindsay Lohan remake. And I probably could add the more embarrassing PARENT TRAP 3: HAWAIIAN HONEYMOON to that list if I actually owned a copy.
Oh, and THE CUTTING EDGE! Nothing says guilty pleasure like Olympic Ice Skating romance!

Can I tell you – the Dare household owns a copy of that. And I did not buy it. Yep, Mr. Dare’s movie collection is divided between sappy romance flicks and martial arts films. What a renaissance man.

If we are having true confessions, I will confess to watching THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK (Leo DaCaprio, Gabriel Byrne, etc)over and over again. The really tacky movie I watch over and over? SHAUN OF THE DEAD!! And ladies, my hometown critique group went to see BECOMING JANE tonight. Do NOT miss it! It was lovely. Picture five mature ladies leaving the theatre sniffling.

One cheesy movie that I can’t rewatch over and over again is Can’t Buy Me Love (starring a very young Patrick Dempsey) and She’s Out of Control (Tony Danza).
But Baby Boom, that movie is so good. That roadside kiss between Diane Keaton and Sam Shepherd is so sexy!

I’m gonna one-up CM and Terrio–I never even had a TV until after college. My parents didn’t approve of television. Of course that didn’t stop me from going to my friend’s house and watching Better Off Dead with John Cusack about a million times. I want my two dollars!

doglady – LOVE Shaun of the Dead! There are any number of lame movies I will watch on cable TV, typically started when I fold the laundry. I usually only watch specifc programs on TV, but folding laundry is the one time I might channel surf. And then I’ll get sucked into a movie I’ve seen a gazillion times, but I lurve it. The Wedding Singer was the last one.
Tessa, Mr. Burke and I used to be big movie-goers, but now we settle for renting or most likely watching some DVD for the umpteenth time. I’ve seen Notting Hill about fifty times, I’d guess. Maybe. I dunno. I lost count. Love that movie.
But, this is TMI so I have to go with Stripes. Classic. My brother and I regularly quote that movie. Can’t see it too many times. Guess I shouldn’t have drank all that cough syrup…

Well, I’m late to the party again. So I’ll just pretend it’s TMI Wednesday. Delusions work for me. Heck, I’ve had tons of practice while looking in the mirror 🙂
Okay, hands down….fav, fav, fav movie of all time is “Rear Window’ by Hitchcock. Grace Kelly rocks. And Jimmy Stewart ain’t too shabby either. And Raymond Burr…well, I alway saw hidden torture in his sad eyes. Moved me a bit.
And all time adventure kid movies. Well, from bairn years, it would be ‘THE GOONIES’ (did I spell that right?) And from recent years; NATIONAL TREASURE’
I watch these over and over again. Oh, and ‘BUTCHER’S WIFE’ man, I love that one as well. Okay, enough of my blether. Tootles.

Tessa – mine was big into Barney but thank goodness we never got into the Teletubbies. We did hit a Wiggles phase for a while but that wasn’t so bad. Captain Feathersword is kind of cute. LOL!

Doglady, I adore Gabriel Byrne. Another movie I watch over and over (without shame) is Little Women, and oh how I heart Mr. Baer! It is to my shame (and a testament to my nonexistant life) that I have not yet seen Becoming Jane.
Ely, I remember Can’t Buy Me Love! that was a good one.
And Lenore – oh, my John Cusack love knows no bounds. Although my faves with him are Say Anything and Gross Pointe Blank.
Darcy – I watched Stripes a time or two myself. Sooo funny.
Marianne – nothing from Hitchcock falls in the ’embarrassing’ category, I’m sure. But The Goonies!!! I love the Goonies. We’ve got that on DVD too. Little asthmatic Sean Astin is so cute.
And LOL, Terri – those cute guys are out there on kids’ TV, if you know where to look. Those Zaboomafoo brothers have their appeal, and the guys on the Upside-Down Show. Gotta take ’em where you can get ’em. Still, I’d trade the worst Nickelback tickets for Wiggles front row anytime. 😉

OMG- BABY BOOM. I forgot about that movie- I loved it.
The movie I have watched the most is PRINCESS BRIDE. I can literally recite the dialogue. Even so, the book is ten times better. SUPER funny.
The movie I was recently obsessed with is the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Ahh, Aragorn. Even dirty and sweaty and covered in Ork Blood he is HAWT. My dh likes the battle scenes, I just skip through to what little romance there is, but man it is good.
